Space Traveler Shares Depression Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
