"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of famous fans have publicly begged for the position.

The evidence suggests something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos often show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"Therefore all is invited to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The band have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent toughness called for a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide audience.

However the band will forever be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
